Interim priest Fr. Ted Hottinger and Parochial Administrator Fr. Dennis Backer The Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis assigned Fr. Dennis Backer to the churches of Nativity and Immaculate Conception of Marysburg on June 15th. Father Dennis Backer was from the Church of the Epiphany in Coon Rapids, Minnesota. Born to Elmer and Do Backer, Fr. Backer was raised in Saint Paul Park and is the youngest of nine children. He is a graduate of St. Thomas and served in St. Hubert’s in Chanhassen and at the Church of the Epiphany in Coon Rapids. While thoroughly enjoying both assignments, Fr. Backer is especially grateful for his time with Fr. Mike Krenik at St. Hubert’s. Father Krenik, who is originally from Le Center, congratulated Fr. Backer by exclaiming that he would finally “make it to God’s Country!” Fr. Backer had only been at Epiphany for a year so he was more than a little surprised with he received a personal call from Archbishop Nienstadt assigning him to our parishes. “I’m excited about coming and look forward to becoming a part of the community.” Father Backer confided that on March 3, 2009 (over a year ago) he was moved to begin praying for the churches for which he would one day become pastor. After more than 13 months of daily prayer from Fr. Backer, and from Nativity and Marysburg parishioners, we can happily lay claim to this blessing! Father Backer is very much a people person and looks forward to getting to know everybody. Oh, and by the way—just in case you would like it for your calendar—his birthday is December 17th! |

The INCREDIBLE Power of Prayer... Prayer is communicating with God. All you have to do is ask God for His help. Psalm 107:28-30 reminds us, "Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven." There is power in prayer! |

Since the 1857, Catholics from the Cleveland area met to pray, celebrate Mass and express their faith, often at the home of Peter McCabe. Times were difficult however, and Jesuit missionaries were only occasionally able to pass through the area to celebrate Mass. Despite a long struggle the Catholic pioneers were determined and tenacious. They continued to pursue their dream of having a church and priest of their own. Finally, with a new church and residence, local pioneers incorporated as the Church of the Nativity in 1882. |

We are a people of the country called by God to be a Church of Jesus Christ in our place and time. Through Baptism, we are called to respond to God's invitation with personal commitment and communal action. Our mission is to proclaim the life-giving and hope-giving good news of the Gospel by what we say and do. Through the Holy Spirit, we are empowered to build a strong community based on forgiveness, care, and mutual respect. We are called to share our gifts with the people of God. |
